Below are tutor and faculty biographies from just a few of our renowned legal, finance, contracts, human resource, and management development training experts.


Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty Gareth Batterbee graduated from Cambridge with a degree in History and then joined Deloitte & Touche to train as an Auditor in their London office, specialising in media and professional services clients. He qualified ACA and was admitted to the ICAEW in 2001. Post qualification Gareth moved into a learning and development role with a key focus on skills development, first with Deloitte and then joining Kaplan Hawksmere in 2007. Gareth specialises in delivering highly interactive training, stretching participants to challenge their established thought processes and associated behaviours. He delivers training with the Kaplan Hawksmere team on a range of Management and Leadership topics, including communication skills, project management and coaching, as well as negotiation skills across a range of large private and public sector organisations.

Jeff Biggin is a learning and development specialist with a specific focus on developing leadership. Jeff has worked as a counsellor and lecturer, human resources development manager and business development manager for local authorities and Further Education colleges. He was head of human resources for an international manufacturing organisation in the mid 1990s and had responsibility for establishing and leading change programmes alongside the implementation of HR systems to consolidate the achieved change. After leaving manufacturing Jeff established a consultancy specialising in leadership development, particularly within the context of organisational modernisation and change which he led for 10 years working with a wide range of public, private and third sector organisations. He is currently working at Kaplan Hawksmere specialising in leadership, management and HR development.

Jeff Bulled was a Director of ATC for six years before it became part of Kaplan in 2003. Prior to this his experience was gained, at various times, as Operations, Development and Quality Director with the British Standards Institution (BSIQA) with responsibility for 150 staff and a budget of £15m. He is also Finance Director of Autism Bedfordshire, sits on the management board of SIRA certification services, teaches for Aston Business School and was part time Professor of Operations and Technology (Project Management) at the Institute for Executive Development, Madrid. Jeff leads project and performance management training for Kaplan and is heavily committed to helping organisations get the most from their investments including their people.

Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty Chrissi Evans, H4 Partners, has a wealth of experience as an in-house counsel, both in the UK and overseas, most recently as Group General Counsel at DaimlerChrysler UK. She has an MBA from Cranfield School of Management where she was awarded the Prize for Strategic Management and in 2005 was selected as one of the “50 Most Influential General Counsel”. She became a freelance consultant in 2006 and her work spans large international and smaller legal departments, departments within functions and sole in-house counsel.

Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty Charles Gubbins has been developing and presenting practical training courses for over 20 years and is widely acknowledged as one of the leading presenters on financial reporting and auditing matters. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1979 and moved into training in 1981. Charles’ specialist skills are in the areas of auditing, financial reporting, company law and corporate governance. His client base includes the public sector, professional bodies, accounting firms and companies in a diverse range of business activities.

Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty Gillian Howard is a lawyer and runs her own practice specialising in employment law, personal injuries and occupational medicine. Her work includes carrying out internal investigations and presenting either the management or individual’s cases before internal disciplinary/appeal hearings. She represents employers/employees at industrial tribunals in employment claims cases as well as unfair dismissal and breach of contract claims. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and an Honorary Lecturer of the Institute of Occupational Medicine at Birmingham University.

Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty John Loosemore, founder of Kaplan Altior, has spoken to thousands of lawyers and advised many law firms both in the UK and abroad and advises many firms on practice management issues. He founded and built a large legal practice which he ran for many years and has been at the forefront of the debate on the future role of lawyers. He is the co-author of “Accounting for Success” (Oxford University Press, 3rd Edition 2002) which explains the mysteries of accounts to lawyers.

Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty Bob Phelps is a graduate (BA Hons University of Wales) and qualified as a chartered accountant (ICAEW) with Touche Ross in 1980. After four years in audit practice he joined Kaplan Financial as a tutor and was involved in the set up and running of one of Kaplan Financial’s regional training centres and taught the syllabuses leading to various UK accountancy qualifications. One of Bob’s specialties is the design and delivery of technical courses on financial reporting and related matters including UK, IFRS and US GAAP. Over the past three years this has meant largely concentrating on IFRS / US GAAP and the differences between these and local GAAP.

Kaplan Hawksmere corporate training faculty Chris Sweetman is a solicitor and Kaplan Altior Training Director. Previously, he was a senior lecturer on the LPC and, before that, a company/commercial lawyer with Morgan Cole. He has also spent time on secondment in a commercial role with the Head of Acquisitions at PHS Group, and as an in-house lawyer at RAC, the National Assembly for Wales and the Competition Directorate of the European Commission.

Phil Todd is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He has been a training consultant with Kaplan Financial for over 25 years, designing, developing and delivering training solutions for both private and public sector organisations. His background is in management accounting, developing training solutions which enable organisations make better use of financial information, particularly in respect of budgeting, forecasting and investment appraisal. Over the past five years, Phil has led Kaplan Financial’s creation of “Business Simulations”. He has developed the Business Board Game, a commercial business simulation which has been adopted, with great success, by many clients throughout the world.
